MSU Jazz Orchestra 1 With Guest Soloist Conrad Herwig To Perform at Alma High School
On March 25, the AHS Jazz Band will be hosting a concert with Michigan State University’s Jazz Orchestra 1. MSU Jazz Orchestra 1, directed by Prof. Rodney Whitaker will be performing with MSU Federal Credit Union guest artist-in-residence, trombonist, Conrad Herwig. The concert will begin at 7:00pm and will be held in the Alma High School auditorium.
New York-based jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig is considered one of the world’s complete jazz musicians, atop both the performing and jazz educational fields with an abundance of composer and arranger credits, as well. To date, he has released 20 recordings as a leader in addition to contributing to nearly 200 other recording sessions with some of the most notable artists in jazz. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Frank Sinatra, Joe Lovano and Tom Harrell, among many others.
Preceding the evening concert, MSU Jazz Orchestra 1 will conduct a clinic with Alma High School Jazz students. Professor Whitaker will make suggestions to the AHS jazz band students and MSU students will play alongside the AHS students to demonstrate various concepts. Michigan State University Federal Credit Union guest artist-in-residence Conrad Herwig will also make a guest solo appearance with the AHS jazz band.
The evening concert will begin at 7:00pm and will be held in the Alma High School Auditorium. The AHS Jazz Band will open the concert with a special guest appearance by Conrad Herwig before handing the stage over to MSU Jazz Orchestra 1 for the remainder of the evening. Admission is is free, but a “good-will” donation will be collected at the door to help raise funding to purchase a new baritone saxophone that is much needed by the Alma Band Program. Seating is first come, first serve with the auditorium doors opening at 6:30.
Alma High School is honored to be hosting a jazz ensemble and guest artist of this caliber in our school.
