Timothy Newman is the current band director for Alma Schools. He began teaching at Alma in 2004. Under his direction the band program has consistently earned top ratings at concert band, marching band, and jazz festivals.
Mr. Newman earned his Bachelor’s degree in music education from Michigan State University in 2004. He earned his Master’s degree in music education from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago. Throughout his time at Michigan State, Mr. Newman played trombone in a variety of ensembles including the Wind Symphony, Jazz Band I, Spartan Marching Band, Philharmonic Orchestra, Spartan Brass, and Trombone Choir. He was a semi-finalist for the MSU Honors Competition in 2003. At VanderCook he completed his Master’s degree project on the topic of “Retention in Beginning Band.”
Mr. Newman was the adjunct trombone instructor at Alma College from 2008-2013. He was selected to direct the MSBOA Jr. High All-Star Band in 2006 and the TVC Honors band in 2014 and 2017. In 2001, Mr. Newman was a member of the world championship winning Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. He was selected as the 2001 Cavalier Rookie of the Year.
